A little place called Tulum

Back in September, I was browsing the internet for cheap vacation packages without any intention of really going anywhere. It wasn't until I saw a picture of an ancient Mayan ruin overlooking the Caribbean Sea that I really said "okay, how do I get there and how much it is gonna cost me?" So Tyler and I treated ourselves to a little romantic week-long trip to the Yucatan Peninsula. I picked Tulum because it's quiet (90 minutes from Cancun), historical (I'm a huge history nerd so that's always a plus), and there was a LOT to do.

I regret that I didn't take a ton of pictures while I was there because I felt like we were always on the go! Plus, I feel like lugging around my huge camera bag can be kind of a hassle sometimes, or maybe that's just me. Here are some photos that we took at the Mayan ruins on the beach as well as one cenote (crystal blue water hole) we visited. Since we took pictures at the cenote with a cheap underwater film camera, some of them didn't come out when I got them developed. The pictures below were taken at Casa Cenote, which was very open. We also went to a REALLY amazing one called Gran Cenote, and I was SO looking forward to seeing those pictures, but I guess the film developers couldn't process those ones (SUPER BUMMER, BECAUSE IT WAS AN AMAZING PLACE).

If you're looking for a romantic getaway with lots to do, I HIGHLY recommend going to Tulum! Since it's a local town, it definitely helps if you're with someone who speaks Spanish, just in case someone there is trying to rip you off (Thankfully Tyler saved us from that a couple times). There are also a ton of cheap places to eat and things to do. We loved it!

^^the gorgeous beach by the ruins

^^me being awkward as ever.

^^seeing Mayan ruins in person was definitely a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

^^we met some very nice Canadians who managed to snap a decent photo of us!

^^we were basically gawking over all the PLANTS in Tulum! Seriously...so many tropical plants everywhere.

^^taken with my awesome $6 camera while at the beach

^^this is the first cenote we visited! It was a lot of fun!

^^just a HUGE virgin mary shrine.

^^there were a TON of iguanas just chilling all over our resort. I almost stepped on one! I think seeing the iguanas were basically the highlight of tyler's day.

Like I said, it was a blast and you should definitely go if you have the chance! Life is short! Go, enjoy it!

Me and Him.

Oh, hi Blog. Lost you there for a bit. Thought I'd share an update on the exciting-- or not-so-exciting -- happenings.

We're back in Logan and just started our senior year of college. Now that we're done working for a bit, it's seriously so precious to have this time together-- just the two of us.

Today I wasn't feeling good at ALL. I was whimpering like a helpless child, but in my defense, my stomach was killing me. It's days like today that make me so happy that I married Tyler. He laid in bed with me and rubbed my back until I fell asleep, and he even ran to the gas station to get me some medicine. That guy just loves me so much! Sometimes I just don't get why he settled for me, but hey, I'll take it!

It recently hit me that we've been married for 19 months! Where has the time gone? Marriage is definitely not at all what I thought it'd be, or what the world perceives it to be. Prior to meeting Tyler, I always assumed that those 19-year-old Utah brides were absolutely INSANE! Why would anyone be in such a rush to give up their independence? I mean, live a little, right? I told all my friends, "trust me, I'm going to travel the world and buy and car and have a career before I even THINK of getting hitched." Plus according to the world's standards, you're supposed to date someone for years, then move in together, then maybe five or six years down the road, when you're both in your thirties, start talking about commitment. When I was 18 (gosh, that sounds SO young), I met the nicest guy. ever. And he just happened to make me laugh all the time. And he just happened to want the same things out of life that I wanted. It was hard NOT to imagine a future with him. When you have faith in the future, you don't need to date someone for years to make sure it'll work out. You just know it will.

...And if you think that I'm still crazy for getting married at 19, then what's it to you?

But I am loving this time together. Just the two of us, in college, and playing house. We're absolute best buds, and I wouldn't have it any other way. I was looking through these pictures on my hard drive. Holy cow, we've been so many places together! I am one lucky girl.

On another note... is it normal to get baby hungry when you hit the two year mark? I don't know what it is, but every time a Huggies commercial comes on, or I see a picture of my nieces or nephews, I can't help but think "Oh my goodness, I NEED one!" I may or may not have been utterly bored one day and tried one of those "baby maker" morph things online... and boy, our virtually morphed baby was CUTE if I may say so myself.

A day in the life

Some of you might wonder what my husband and I do to make a living. We are fortunate enough to have a job which only requires four months of work--HARD work. We've been so lucky to be able to have financial stability, and still make room to do fun things throughout the year. (Ok, maybe we had a little too much fun, but it was definitely well worth the splurge.)

You know those annoying people who ring on your doorbell while you're eating dinner or watching your favorite show? You peek through your peephole and see a man, sometimes a woman, carrying a clipboard and wearing a polo. You immediately realize that they are there on your doorstep, trying to sell you some useless crap you don't need, so you either quietly creep away from the door, politely tell them you're not interested, or just yell at them, because they should have known you were busy, right? The salesperson then has about three seconds to change your mind and turn your automatic "no" into a "hmm..." All you can do is try to get him, or her, off your porch as soon as possible so you can get back to "The Voice."

Well, I am that annoying salesperson. Yep. I do door to door sales for a living. Well, actually only for four months during the summer. Then it's vacation time for the other eight months of the year... with a little school on the side.

Here's a day in the life of a saleswoman.

After rushing to get ready in the morning, we hurry to the meeting!

The meetings mainly consist of 60% horseplay, 20% pranks, and 10% business.

After the meeting, we drive out to the area (neighborhood) where we will be working (knocking doors)!

This clipboard is my constant companion for four months. We've been through a lot together.

I knock on about 80 doors a day. If you live near Dallas, one of our teammates have probably knocked on yours.

Some of the neighborhoods are really fancy shmancy...

... while others are a bit more humble.

After a few hours of working, we'll take a nice long (what seems long) lunch break. This mainly consists of napping in a public restaurant or playing on our phones. It's basically the highlight of my day.

Sometimes, we'll squeeze in a 30-minute power nap. I swear, the most difficult thing in the world is waking up from a power nap.

After lunch, it's time to hit the doors again!

Everyone's coming home from work, so we know it's time to make some sales. We won't go home until it gets dark.

We might play a game of top golf, if we're feeling up to it after work.

Luckily, we have Sundays off to go to church and show off our awesome sock tan lines and mosquito bite scars.

Hope you enjoyed a day in the life of a door to door salesperson. I hope this gives you better insight into how hard of a job this really is.

Just remember: be nice to that person who comes to your door. Don't assume they are there to scam you, be patient and kind. Offer them water, even if you are not interested in buying, because TRUST ME, it gets hot out there. Also, if you are busy or eating dinner, don't assume that the salesperson knows that. That may sound silly, but you'd be surprised how many people get mad at me when they're eating dinner. Most importantly, remember that salespeople ARE people.

My favorite (free) fonts

I love free stuff. I love fonts. So naturally, I love free fonts.
Here are my ten favorites that I thought I'd share with you. They are so easy to download, too! Enjoy.

My life then & now.

This morning as I was in the shower, a song came up on Pandora. It was "Sundress" by Ben Kweller. At first, I didn't recognize it, but after about 10 seconds I remembered everything that this song reminded me of. When I was a junior in high school, I used to listen to this song about eight times a day. My mind immediately turned to those high school years.

When I was in high school, I had zero confidence in myself. I didn't feel beautiful and I felt perpetually overweight. I didn't have friends who lifted me up regularly. I had friends who laughed at my religion and who made fun of my family. I felt like girls at church judged me because I was different and didn't fit their "Molly Mormon" stereotype and my family didn't have a lot of money. I dated a boy who pressured me to do certain things because his best friend "did all that with his girlfriend all the time." I had to work at a greasy burger place for three years while not having a car of my own. I didn't respect myself or my body. I would go hungry at night because I felt pressure to be a twig. I felt like I couldn't truly be Wyatte. Worst of all, I didn't feel God's love for me because I wasn't showing him proper respect. I wanted to get away, move somewhere, but I was stuck there.

When the opportunity showed itself to move to Salt Lake City with my best friend, I immediately knew that I HAD to go. It was now or never, and I felt like there was a life waiting for me there that would bring me some kind of happiness. And it was all true. I met a man who treated me like I was the princess of the Earth. He didn't kiss me until 14 days after we started seeing each other. He always told me I was beautiful and I deserved the absolute best. That was all so new to me, and it took me a while to realize that I do deserve something great because I do have a lot to offer.

Right now, I could care less about clothes, shopping, or blowing money on the latest trends. I love food and I will never starve myself again. I have been blessed financially and don't have to worry about money right now. I surround myself with good people who lift me up. I've been able to see and do SO much. I have a man who loves me endlessly and treats me like a queen.

When I got out of the shower this morning, I looked in the mirror and thought of how much my life had changed. I don't really know that girl in high school anymore. I feel like right now, I am Wyatte, the weird, food-loving, singing, dancing, Mormon freak I was always meant to be. And I haven't been happier.

Visiting the (freezing) Pacific Northwest

Spring break was SO much fun! Tyler and I took a roadtrip to Portland (and the coast) and Seattle. There is just something so great about going on a random roadtrip with no plans, no itinerary, and no hotel reservations. Plus, it's great to have these spontaneous trips before we have kiddos to take care of (which won't be soon, anyway). We had never been to the northwest before so it was pretty cool getting to explore. I will say that I doubt I could stand living there... it rains ALL the time! I'd get seasonal depression right away.

In Oregon, we visited the beautiful Japanese Gardens, the (roseless) rose gardens, the gigantic Oregon Zoo, Forest Park, and of course, Voodoo donut. We also went to the Oregon coast, which was positively freezing. After about 30 minutes of walking on the beach, we were pretty much soaked from head to toe. Overall, Oregon is such a pretty place and I love the greenery. If only it weren't so rainy all the time...

Seattle was a pretty cool city and there was a lot to see. It was raining quite a bit and we looked like wet street rats wandering around downtown. Pike's Market Place was so neat and it was right on the water. If you ever visit Seattle, it's definitely a must-see. We also saw the famous Space Needle, but we didn't go all the way to the top because it was cloudy anyway. We ran into the gum wall by accident. That was a little gross, but I'll admit I was bummed that we didn't have any gum to add to it! Maybe next time.

Thanks Oregon and Washington for being a total blast!
